Vegetated roofs for managing stormwater quantity in cold climate

چکیده
Vegetated roofs, i.e. green were continuously measured for runoff to quantify their capacity manage stormwater in a field experiment southern Finland, with distinct seasonality and varying weather conditions. Attention was paid heavy storms study the potential mitigating urban flooding. In addition, impact of biochar amendment (10% v /v) on rainfall retention studied. Meadow vegetation established crushed brick based substrate either by introducing plants as seedlings seeds or using pre-grown readymade mats. Annual varied from 40% 70%. The highest retention, ca. 80%, found summer even though it rainiest season. Wintertime 30–40%. coarse enabled infiltration when frozen and, thus, roofs operated also winter. Heavy occurred mainly summer, season hydrologic performance resulting >80% peak attenuation slow release runoff. individual rain events, meadow largely function depth. However, weakly explained amount other variables, such intensity antecedent dry period, indicating difficulty capturing complex phenomena behind variable Biochar improved only slightly, at maximum 10%. empirical evidence this highlights vegetated feasible technology be applied management cold climate.

Green schools are a new type of school, in which the use of renewable energy is less than that of conventional schools. In this regard, nowadays, adding green layers to the roof of schools, in addition to increasing the Students' communication with nature, energy saving has improved in these spaces. However, to improve energy saving yield, the priority of these types of roofs in different clima...

Urban land area in the United States is projected to increase to 8.1% of total land area by the year 2050. These human-dominated environments create conditions that degrade both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. If cities are to reduce their environmental impact, innovative practices must be developed that replace ecosystem services lost during the urbanization process. This study evaluated t...
متن کاملA pilot study to evaluate runoff quantity from green roofs.
The use of green roofs is gaining increased recognition in many countries as a solution that can be used to improve environmental quality and reduce runoff quantity. To achieve these goals, pilot-scale green roof assemblies have been constructed and operated in an urban setting. From a stormwater management perspective, green roofs are 42.8-60.8% effective in reducing runoff for 200 mm soil dep...
متن کاملThermal Performance of Extensive Green Roofs in Cold Climates
Green roof is a specialized roofing system that supports vegetation growth on rooftops. This technology is rapidly gaining popularity in North America as a sustainable design option. Green roofs offer multiple benefits to urban areas such as reduction of heating/cooling needs for the building, urban heat island and stormwater runoff for the region. In this study, the performance of two extensiv...
متن کاملManaging Climate Change Refugia for Climate Adaptation
Refugia have long been studied from paleontological and biogeographical perspectives to understand how populations persisted during past periods of unfavorable climate. Recently, researchers have applied the idea to contemporary landscapes to identify climate change refugia, here defined as areas relatively buffered from contemporary climate change over time that enable persistence of valued ph...
